Sesso Yuho
Sesso Yuho
Unknown – 1576
Sesso Yuho was a Soto Zen master who contributed to the school's intellectual and spiritual development. He maintained the tradition's emphasis on zazen practice while engaging with the broader Buddhist scholarly world, helping to articulate the Soto school's distinctive understanding of practice and realization.
Yuho's teaching carried forward the Soto principle of the non-duality of practice and enlightenment—Dogen's fundamental insight that zazen is not a means to awakening but its direct expression. This understanding, simple to state but profound in its implications, remains the defining characteristic of the Soto school.
