Kinen Horyu

Unknown – 1506

Kinen Horyu was a Soto Zen master who contributed to the tradition's continuity in Japan. He maintained the practice of zazen and the transmission of the Dharma within the Soto school, serving as a link in the unbroken chain of teachers stretching from Dogen to the present.

Horyu's presence in the lineage reflects the Soto school's emphasis on faithful transmission as the foundation of the tradition. Each teacher in the chain carries the entire weight of the lineage—the accumulated practice and realization of all previous generations—and passes it forward to those who come after.
