Shogaku Kenryu

Unknown – 1485

Shogaku Kenryu was a Soto Zen master who contributed to the tradition's continuity in Japan. He maintained the school's standards of practice and transmission, serving as a link in the lineage that connects Dogen's original teaching to the present day.

Kenryu's place in the Soto succession reflects the school's emphasis on unbroken transmission as the guarantee of authenticity. The Soto tradition holds that the Dharma can only be fully communicated through the personal encounter between teacher and student, and that this encounter must be grounded in the shared practice of zazen.
