Kokei Shojun
Kokei Shojun
Unknown – 1555
Kokei Shojun was a Soto Zen master who served in the lineage of Eiheiji and contributed to the school's institutional leadership. He helped maintain the high standard of monastic training for which Eiheiji was known, ensuring that Dogen's original vision of rigorous zazen practice remained central to the training monastery's life.
Shojun's service to Eiheiji reflects the Soto school's commitment to institutional continuity. The monastery founded by Dogen in 1244 has maintained an unbroken tradition of practice for over seven centuries, and this continuity depends on the dedicated service of abbots and teachers like Shojun who ensure that the training remains authentic and vital.
