Mazu Daoyi stands 35 generations from Shakyamuni Buddha in the Nanyue line line, receiving transmission from Nanyue Huairang (677–744). The line above runs back through Dayi Daoxin, Daman Hongren, Dajian Huineng and their predecessors to Shakyamuni Buddha.
