Dōgen stands 52 generations from Shakyamuni Buddha in the Sōtō line, receiving transmission from Tiantong Rujing (1163–1228). The line above runs back through Zhenxie Qingliao, Tiantong Zongjue, Xuedou Zhijian and their predecessors to Shakyamuni Buddha.
