Dongshan Liangjie stands 38 generations from Shakyamuni Buddha in the Qingyuan line line, receiving transmission from Yunyan Tansheng (780–841). The line above runs back through Qingyuan Xingsi, Shitou Xiqian, Yaoshan Weiyan and their predecessors to Shakyamuni Buddha.
