The Flower Sermon
According to tradition, the Buddha held up a flower before the assembled monks on Vulture Peak. Only Mahakashyapa smiled, receiving the wordless transmission that would define Zen's core claim: a direct pointing to the mind, beyond words and letters. While historically unverifiable, this narrative became the foundational myth of Chan lineage.
